More than 400 people, many wearing orange shirts and carrying candles, walked through Derek Doubleday Arboretum in Langley on Tuesday night to mark national Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

Drummers and singers accompanied them.

Among them was Cecelia Reekie, president of the Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society, one of the organizers of the event, whose father was a residential school supervisor.

"It's so important that we do this," Reekie told the Langley Advance Times.

"The reality is, in Canada, this is our fifth year of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, so you know, there'll be many more years [of this event] as we continue to unravel this true history of Canada."
