Deputy Edgar Corona of the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office is the September employee of the month after helping a choking student at Eastbrook Middle School.
He started with WCSO in 2021 on the patrol division, later being promoted to narcotics. Most recently, though, he made the move to the agency's School Resource Officer Unit.
Deputy Corona serves Eastbrook Middle School, where on Tuesday, Sept. 18, he was conducting security checks around the school, the sheriff's office says.
He was alerted on his school radio that a student on the second floor of the school was choking on a piece of candy.
Deputy Corona sprang into action, running to the student and performing the Heimlich maneuver. He was able to dislodge the stuck candy, preventing them from further choking.
