Police in Florida have determined that a 17-year-old boy who alleged he was shot and kidnapped by Hispanic men last week was actually a lie.

On Monday, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in Ocala said the teen, Caden Speight, was reported missing last Thursday and a Florida Amber Alert was issued after he texted details of his alleged abduction to his family.

But it proved to be false.

“I want to commend my deputies and detectives that sprang into action and worked through the night and into the next day on this,” Sheriff Billy Woods said in a video message shared to social media. “In addition, we also had help from other state and federal agencies.”
