The body of a 15-year-old boy killed in 1974 was exhumed from a cemetery in Swampscott on Wednesday, the Essex County District Attorney’s office confirmed.

The person being exhumed was Henry Bedard, a 15-year-old boy who died in 1974.

“In response to information recently received, a court order was allowed to exhume Bedard’s body,” Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker’s office said.

Bedard was last seen on Dec. 16, 1974 on a walk home from Christmas shopping in Vinnin Square, prosecutors said. The teen was found the next day in the woods off of Suffolk Avenue in Swampscott behind what is now the Department of Public Works building on Paradise Road.

A baseball bat with “unique markings” on its handle was found near his body, prosecutors said.
