Sep 28, 2025; Santa Clara, California, USA; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (13) after the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Levi's Stadium.

There's a slice of déjà vu happening in the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback room this week.

Fresh off his first start since missing two weeks with toe and shoulder injuries, Brock Purdy will not play on "Thursday Night Football" in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams, per the team's injury report. Purdy did not participate in practice on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

He's not the only starter to be out for Thursday's game, either. Wide receivers Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall will miss the team's third NFC West game of the season.

Purdy struggled in Week 4 against the Jaguars and appeared limited by his toe injury.

Mac Jones, who started in Purdy's place in Week 2 and Week 3, will get his third start of the season. Jones completed 53 of 80 passes (66.3%) for 563 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in his two starts.

San Francisco has not placed Purdy on injured reserve (IR) which would take him out of the lineup for four weeks. That means he may have a better shot at starting in Week 6 when the team is not on a short turnaround for "Thursday Night Football."

49ers QB depth chart

  • Brock Purdy (injured)
  • Mac Jones
  • Adrian Martinez (practice squad)
  • Kurtis Rourke (non-football injury list)

Martinez may be moved to the active roster for Thursday's game against the Rams. Rourke appears unlikely to play at all in 2025 as he recovers from an ACL injury.
