PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) -- A Pennsylvania Representative is looking to make swatting a crime in the Commonwealth through two pieces of legislation.

Swatting is the act of a person making fraudulent or hoax 9-1-1 calls designed to trick law enforcement or emergency responders into sending a heavily armed response, such as a SWAT team, to a specific location, according to Rep. Craig Williams' newest memo. Offenders typically exploit technology to disguise their identity or even make it appear that the call is coming from the victim's own phone.

"In recent years, these incidents have escalated dramatically across the country, posing a growing threat to public safety," Williams wrote. "Pennsylvania has been no exception."
