* The federal government shutdown began just after midnight after the Senate failed to pass a short-term funding bill. * Every federal department and agency has its own set of procedures for operating during a shutdown. Many federal employees will be furloughed, but others may need to show up for work without pay. Trump has also threatened to impose mass layoffs on federal workers. * White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters today that layoffs of federal workers because of the government shutdown are “imminent.” * Two unions have filed suit against the Trump administration over its plans to fire federal workers during the shutdown, alleging that the “unlawful threats” were contrary to the law and should be declared unlawful by a federal court.
