GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — New state laws aimed at keeping kids safe from gun violence went into effect Wednesday.

Under the Safe Homes, Safe Schools package of laws, school districts must educate parents about the safe storage of firearms by posting information on their website and distributing it to parents.

Michigan's safe storage law, which went into effect in 2024, requires that guns in homes with children be safely stored in a safe or with a lock. There are some school districts that have already been working to tell caregivers about the law.
