Roughly 900 General Motors Co. workers at the automaker's Kansas assembly plant have been laid off indefinitely as timing for a second shift remains uncertain, a spokesperson said Wednesday.

GM last year ended production of the Chevrolet Malibu sedan at its Fairfax Assembly and Stamping Plant near Kansas City, Kan., and this year stopped making the Cadillac XT4 small SUV there.

Instead, GM laid out plans to manufacture the revamped electric Chevy Bolt in Fairfax.

But since then, the company has pared back ambitious EV goals following lagging interest among U.S. drivers, the end of $7,500 tax credits for buyers and lessees, and President Donald Trump's effort to repeal strict greenhouse gas rules.
