SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The City of Savannah has reported a pollution violation to state officials after a "major sewer spill" occurred in the Savannah River, officials announced Wednesday.

Routine testing of treated wastewater from Wilshire Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) on Sept. 25 reportedly found that the concentration of Biological Oxygen Demand (CBOD5) exceeded the threshold required for public notice.

BOD is described as a "measure of the oxygen required to break down organic materials in water" according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
