COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina lawmakers are considering one of the strictest abortion bans in the nation, a proposal that would outlaw the procedure at any stage of pregnancy except in cases of medical emergency.
A Senate Medical Affairs subcommittee Wednesday heard testimony on the “ Unborn Child Protection Act ,” which would impose criminal penalties of up to 30 years in prison for performing or aiding an abortion.
Hundreds filled the State House to testify on the bill, with a packed subcommittee hearing and more waiting outside. The subcommittee, which has no women on it. alternated testimony from people for and against the bill.
