Paychecks, Inland Empire mothers and children, air travel and Joshua trees could bear the brunt of the federal government shutdown that started Wednesday, Oct. 1 .

Parts of the federal bureaucracy deemed non-essential went dark after Republicans and Democrats failed to reach a deal to extend government funding. Both parties are blaming the other for the shutdown, the fourth to occur during President Donald Trump’s two terms in the White House.
