A sudden stratospheric warming event over the Antarctic this week is expected to bring a chaotic spring to Australia’s south and a drier than average season to the nation’s east.

The extremely rare weather event has led to temperatures high above Antarctica climbing by more than 30C.

Weatherzone reports the polar vortex is weakening, and cold air circling around the Antarctic region is being dragged away towards southern Australia by the southern hemisphere’s polar jet stream.

This could mean more rain and westerly winds for southern Australia, including parts of Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia and a higher change of abnormally hot days in southern Australia.

In the nation’s east, it could bring drier than average weather.
