Catalina "Xóchitl" Santiago enjoyed her freedom again in El Paso for the first time since August.
Santiago, an immigration advocate and a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient, was released from an ICE Detention Center around 4:40 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 1, her mother-in-law, Kathy Hernandez, confirmed to the El Paso Times.
She was detained by U.S. Border Patrol agents on Aug. 3 at the El Paso International Airport, despite presenting a valid work authorization card. Santago was placed in an ICE detention center and placed on a fast track for deportation by the Trump administration.
“We have been waiting for this day,” Hernandez said. "We are so happy."
