ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The family of a man who was shot and killed by a Georgia state trooper in 2020 has reached a $5.5 million settlement with the state.
Andrew Smyrna’s family initially filed a federal lawsuit in 2021, alleging the trooper used excessive force when he shot at Smyrna’s car nine times, according to Stewart Miller Simmons Trial Attorneys.

The incident happened on Jan. 23, 2020. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Smyrna was driving in an allegedly stolen car, which a Georgia State Patrol trooper found in the 100 block of Leslie Street SE in the Edgewood neighborhood.
