Purple Ribbons from Catholic Charities Mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month

ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- With October marking the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, staff and volunteers with Catholic Charities of Chemung & Schuyler Counties tied purple ribbons around Elmira to raise awareness. A Catholic Charities official said it's likely you might know someone who has experienced domestic violence.

" One in four women has experienced domestic violence. One in seven men has experienced domestic violence. So, the chances are high that you do know someone who’s been impacted in some way by domestic violence," said Marketing and Development Director for Catholic Charities of Chemung & Schuyler Counties, Katie Rhodes.

Rhodes said domestic violence doesn't always mean physical abuse.

"Domestic violence isn’t always physical. Domestic violence can be emotional, i
