CLEVELAND -- In the seventh inning on Wednesday with two runners on base, A.J. Hinch did something he’s never done before. He pinch-hit for Riley Greene in a big moment.

The Detroit Tigers were searching for a spark in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series . When the Cleveland Guardians summoned left-hander Tim Herrin, Detroit finally had a window to use Jahmai Jones, whose success against lefties has been one of the team’s quiet weapons. The Tigers couldn’t deploy him in Game 1 because of Cleveland’s ability to flip between left- and right-handed arms. But with runners aboard and a rare matchup in their favor, Hinch took the chance.

It didn’t work. Jones struck out as the Tigers watched yet another scoring opportunity fizzle.
