A partial shutdown of the federal government Wednesday left some local services in limbo and military families at Vandenberg Space Force Base bracing for disruption.

The shutdown is the first since 2018-19 , the longest in U.S. history at 35 days, when a similar funding impasse over border wall construction affected Santa Barbara County by furloughing federal workers, delaying national park services at Channel Islands National Park, and straining local programs like Head Start and WIC.

Defense officials reported that many civilian Department of Defense employees are furloughed, while essential personnel will work without pay until lawmakers reach an agreement.
