The first full week in October, Oct. 5-11, will be observed as Fire Prevention Week in the United States. Locally, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department will focus on rechargeable battery safety.

Residents are urged to take the week to learn about ways to keep their families safe when using batteries included with items like e-bikes and scooters, laptops, power tools and other everyday electronics.

To reduce the risk of fire associated with rechargeable batteries, County Fire urges residents to buy from reputable sources and to avoid off brand or counterfeit items — especially those sold online.

When charging the battery, place devices on hard, non-flammable surfaces such as tile, metal or concrete. Never charge on beds, couches rugs or other soft surfaces.
