LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – The Lancaster Ice Rink is prioritizing safety and sustainability heading into the winter sports season.

Through a partnership with Ecore International, more than 12,000 pounds of the building's rubber flooring was removed. It will be repurposed for other performance facilities. That reduces 30.5 tons of CO₂ emissions generated in new rubber production.

General Manager Larry Courville says replacing the floor gives back to the environment, while keeping skaters safe.

"Our old existing flooring was here for several years and we had some bubbling, so it wasn't very appealing to the eyes," Courville says. "We do have some elderly members that come to our facility and sometimes they can trip over the rubber."
