CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - Not even 24 hours into the government shutdown, concerns about access to food benefits arise.

Reports said the national WIC Association confirmed federal funding for the WIC Program could run out within the next week if the government does not reopen.

That means more than 100 thousand Virginia families could feel the interruption.

Sarah Steely, Director of No Kid Hungry, says this news terrifies her.

“So WIC, not only helps families make ends meet, it also helps the development of babies and young children, and y’all, that’s the future of Virginia,” Steely said.
