MUSKEGON, Mich. — There have been concerns for a long time about the metal and chemical contaminants on the site where a housing development is planned on property where the old SAPPI Paper Mill in Muskegon operated for decades.
The state says those contaminants are still in the ground.
“It would behoove the state and even the federal government if they got involved and helped clean that property,” said Renee Schwartz, a Muskegon resident who lives on Muskegon Lake near the site of the development.
Schwartz said that she’s not against housing developments in the area, but said that it’s important that the site is safe. She also said that, from what she knows, it isn't.
