More than a quarter of large companies with annual incomes above $100 million paid no tax in the most recent reporting year, but the Tax Office says the figure is improving.

Optus' parent company SingTel, Virgin Australia and AGL Energy were among the companies that paid no tax, despite their multibillion-dollar incomes.

The Tax Office's latest Corporate Tax Transparency (CTT) report assessed 4110 companies with a total income exceeding $100 million.

Together, the companies paid a combined $95.7 billion in income tax in 2023-24, down from the year before when $97.9 billion was collected .

But 1136 of those large companies paid no tax at all in 2023-24, representing 28 per cent of entities.
