FARGO — The first government shutdown in more than six years is now underway, and experts warn the impacts could worsen the longer it lasts.

The North Dakota Farm Bureau has issued similar concerns, noting that some loans and disaster relief programs are paused during the shutdown.

Luckily for farmers and consumers, the short-term effects are limited. Consumers are not expected to see significant impacts right away, and several federal programs remain in place.

Still, North Dakota Farm Bureau President Daryl Lies said some farmers may need patience as financial support stalls.

"The longer it goes, maybe the more things that will end up being affected along the way," Lies said.
