MEDINA, Ohio -- Thirty Friends of the Cemetery joined board member Paul Wood Sept. 28 for a guided tour around Spring Grove Cemetery.

They were able to view the amazing contributions and improvements the organization has made to the cemetery over the past 28 years.

Wood began his presentation with a brief history of the Friends group.

“It all began in 1995 when Teresa Merkle became concerned with conditions, especially at the baby section,” he said.

“Teresa approached (then) mayor (James) Roberts, who then appointed her chair of the then defunct Cemetery Commission.

“The commission worked through a Letha House Foundation grant to formulate a master plan, which included a ‘Friends’ group,” Wood said.

“Early on, the Stephenson and Feckley foundations were benefactors as well.”
