Police say a man drowned in a river at a popular camping spot north of Perth , after slipping from a sand bank and “disappearing under water”.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at Moore River, in Guilderton, after reports seven people “entered” the river while walking along the bank about 10.45am on Tuesday.

It is unclear why the group — who were all known to each other — entered the water.

“All seven people were pulled from the water by bystanders, shortly before the arrival of emergency services,” a police spokesperson said.

St John WA paramedics performed CPR on a 38-year-old man after he was found unresponsive in the deep river, but he could not be saved.

The West Australian understands he was not local to the area.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
