Mayor Matthew Shoemaker said he’s “surprised and disappointed” that Sault Ste. Marie MPP Chris Scott will not step away from his role for the betterment of the community.

Scott announced through social media Thursday that he plans on taking a short leave from partisan and non-essential public appearances, but his constituency office will remain open to help constituents.

“Serving this community is one of the greatest honours and privileges of my life,” his statement reads.

Shoemaker said Sault Ste. Marie faces enormous challenges, many of which are within the purview of the provincial government.

They include getting a HART Hub operational, relocating the men’s shelter and moving forward with the Port of Algoma. Social services, school boards and the not-for-profit
