NEW CANTON, Ill. (WAND) - Residents in New Canton are being told to stay indoors while police respond to an active situation Thursday morning, according to the Pike County Sheriff's Department.

New Canton is approximately 60 miles west of Jacksonville near the Mississippi River.

The sheriff's department said on Facebook it's working to "bring this matter to a safe resolution." It has not said what they are investigating.

The New canton Fire Department asked people to avoid driving through New Canton, a town of about 300. It also asked residents to stay in their homes and lock their doors.

Western CUSD 12 said its schools in the area were on a "soft lockdown" as of 10:30 a.m. The school was proceeding as normal, but half-day PM Pre-K classes were canceled.
