Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings has joined the Federal Trade Commission and a coalition of 19 states in an effort to stop what they describe as a "deceptive" cancer charity fundraising venture.
The operation in question, Kars-R-Us.com, Inc. – alongside its operators Michael Irwin and Lisa Frank – reportedly raised millions of dollars for charity on United Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.’s behalf, but only a tiny amount went to fund breast cancer screenings, according to the complaint filed by the commission and the states involved.
Using national and local TV, radio and online ads, Kars asked for vehicle donations under the claim it would "save lives" through the screenings, according to the complaint. More than 84,000 people donated their vehicles to the venture, the DOJ said.
