There are more than 25,000 federal employees in Massachusetts, essential and non-essential, that could be affected by the government shutdown. The last government shutdown in 2019 lasted for 35 days. It’s uncertain how long this one will last—here are some things people can do now to help with expenses.

If you are nervous about being able to make credit card payments, call your card issuer and ask about hardship programs, waiving late fees and lowering minimum payments.

If you are worried about being able to pay your rent or mortgage, contact your landlord or lender and ask about short term payment deferrals. Renters could also ask landlords if payments could be split into smaller amounts.
