Berthoud officials report that experts have confirmed the presence of emerald ash borer within the town.

The non-native, invasive insect attacks and kills both stressed and healthy trees, typically within two to four years, according to a release from Berthoud.

The town has 915 ash trees on public property, which account for about 8% of the total, “and there are significantly more located on private property,” the release states.

“If we lose all of these trees … it will have a significant impact on Berthoud’s tree canopy and general landscape,” Paul Furnas, the town forester, said in the release.

Emerald ash borer was first confirmed in Colorado in 2013 in Boulder and has since spread to other cities and towns, including in Longmont and Loveland.
