WASHINGTON — The government shutdown stretched into a second day Thursday, with no sign of a deal.

As Republicans and Democrats continue pointing fingers about how we got here, political analyst Stephen Voss will watch which way public opinion breaks in the days ahead, he said.

“Neither party wants to be the side that the voters blame for the shutdown,” said Voss. “The more the public turns against one of the parties for the shutdown, the more pressure that party will face to make some concessions in order to get a bill passed.”

Republicans propose funding the government until the third week of November, mostly at current levels, to buy time to work out a deal for the full year.
