The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) secured a $2.5 billion settlement against Amazon after alleging the company used deceptive methods to sign consumers up for Prime subscriptions and made it difficult to cancel.
Amazon is now required to pay a $1 billion civic penalty, provide $1.5 billion in refunds back to customers impacted by Prime enrollment practices, as well as cease unlawful enrollment and cancellation practices for Prime, according to a release from the FTC.
Amazon Prime customers that meet the eligibility criteria within the settlement will receive refunds, with some receiving payment through automatic payment and others through a claims process.
