MUSKEGON, Mich. — As summer winds down, Muskegon’s parks are signaling the season’s shift.

Public restrooms across the city have officially closed for the year, marking the start of fall and the transition to reduced seasonal services.

Matt Schwemin, park supervisor for the City of Muskegon, said this is a historic practice.

“Every year about this time, we button up all the seasonal things for the year,” Schwemin said. “Bathrooms are closed, some of our trash services are reduced a little bit. We still have plenty of portable units ... that are available for folks to use.”

He noted that closures generally start after Labor Day and run until mid-May, with all 32 city parks following the same schedule.

“It’s kind of the unofficial end to summer,” Schwemin added.
