STURGEON BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - People in Sturgeon Bay are concerned over the possible expansion of a family-owned business.
Gilbert Farms requested a permit to turn the dairy farm into a concentrated animal feeding operation, or CAFO (pronounced “kay-foe”).
Some community members in Sturgeon Bay say they are worried that the proposed farm expansion could impact things like the town’s water and air quality if approved.
There are over 8,000 wells in Door County where 2/3 of community members use that water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Gilbert Farms currently has over 1,400 animal units on the property which, according to the DNR, would qualify as a CAFO.
