LINCOLN, N.H. —

The federal government shutdown is starting to have an impact in New Hampshire’s White Mountains National Forest, with closed buildings and limited public services affecting visitors and hikers.

At the National Forest headquarters in Campton, signs indicate the building is closed due to the government shutdown. Parking lots are accessible, but visitors like Liz Fay, a trail volunteer, were disappointed to find the office locked.

"It's frustrating because as a trail adopter, we can't volunteer until the shutdown is over," said Fay.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) website has limited information, but points blame at Democrats for the shutdown. USDA officials confirmed that forests remain open and essential services, including fire and disaster response, continue
