PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon schools are starting to see some progress after Gov. Tina Kotek instituted a statewide phone ban in class. Kotek signed an executive order over the summer, banning phone use throughout the school day.
Oregon lawmakers held a recent roundtable Zoom call, where state leaders said they've noticed kids interacting more with each other, with phones off and away all day.
Some speakers mentioned they are hearing more laughter in hallways as well.
State leaders believe the new cell phone policy will positively impact students' mental health and academics. When phones are banned, there are less distractions in the classroom.
Some schools have also added Yondr pouches . Students place their phones in Yondr pouches, which are locked throughout the school day.
