PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon’s latest statewide assessment scores show minimal gains for students overall , with statewide results in both math and English jumping only 0.5%. Meanwhile, Portland Public Schools scores show the district results surpassing pre-pandemic performance levels in math and inching closer in English Language Arts.

Statewide, just 43% of students in grades 3-8 met benchmarks in English language arts and 31.5% in math, according to 2024-25 results. That’s a half-point improvement over last year — but well below 2018-19, when 53.4% of students met English standards and 39.4% met math.

At Portland Public Schools, students improved at a faster pace. English scores rose by 1.6 percentage points to 57%, and math jumped 2.1 points to 48.5%. Compared to pre-pandemic levels, PP
