LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Deer hunting season has started, and deer mating season is right around the corner, meaning drivers could begin to see more deer on the roadways.
Michigan State Police (MSP) say the months between October and December bring an increased risk for drivers when it comes to deer. In 2023, the state saw nearly 60,000 deer-related crashes, and more than two million deer make up Michigan’s herd.
That’s why police are telling drivers to look out for road signs, be aware of the surrounding areas that deer might populate, and to use high-beam headlights to see the road better.
Lt. Rene Gonzalez with the Michigan State Police says they tell drivers not to veer, but steer.
