The federal government has updated its travel advisory to the U.S. with a warning that people who have the gender-neutral “X” identifier on their passports may face restrictions when crossing the southern border.

The advisory notes that some countries, including the U.S., may not recognize the “X” gender identifier, meaning that it’s not guaranteed that people using passports with those markers will be able to enter or travel through those countries.

“You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the ‘X’ gender identifier,” the advisory said. “Before you leave, verify this information with the closest foreign representative for your destination.”
