PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- The Peoria Fire Department is showing its support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in a visible way.

Throughout October, firefighters will be wearing pink t-shirts and pink badges as part of their annual tradition.

Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger says the effort is meant to honor survivors, raise awareness, and remind the community about the importance of early detection.

“Just about every single person has a family member, a friend, a neighbor, somebody close to them that, unfortunately, has had to experience this type of illness. Basically, it’s our Peoria firefighters saying, we stand with you,” Sollberger said.

The department has made the awareness campaign a yearly commitment, with firefighters wearing pink both at the station and on calls throughout the month.
