Extra school bus services to try to ease expected traffic chaos when the Fremantle Traffic Bridge closes are just tinkering on the edge of the problem, according to the Greens WA.

The bridge is scheduled to be closed to traffic early next year for about 12 months, with the State Government yet to announce a formal date.

Its replacement will have two lanes in each direction, wider active transport paths and a higher clearance for watercraft.

Preparatory works started earlier this year and there are already complaints that getting over the bridge is a nightmare, including it taking 90 minutes to get from Nedlands to White Gum Valley.
