Further details of the Manchester synagogue terror attacker have emerged after police named the man shot dead by armed officers as 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie.

In an update on Thursday evening, police confirmed the identity of the man they believe killed two people and left another three injured in a car and knife rampage outside Heaton Park synagogue on Thursday morning.

Counter Terrorism Policing said formal identification is yet to take place.

The horrifying scenes unfolded when the attacker drove a car into worshippers outside the religious building on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur. He then got out of the car and launched a knife attack.
