It was a day that should have been filled with prayer and reflection as the Jewish community observed Yom Kippur, their holiest day of the year.

But Thursday, October 2 was the date their worst fears came true.

At 9.31am a 999 call was made by a member of the public who had seen a car being driven into a crowd of people outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road, Crumpsall.

Inside, the shul was packed with people marking Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. In terms of importance in the religious year, it is similar to Christmas Day for Christians, but is a day of solemnity and fasting rather than celebration.
