Hazmat crews cleaned fuel from the intersection of Brown Road and Highway 1 Thursday morning — the highway remained closed south of Guadalupe until about 1 p.m. — as wreckage of a semi-truck that was hit by an Amtrak train the day before was hauled away.

The driver of the 2020 Peterbilt, owned by Santa Maria-based Thompson & Harvey Transportation, died at the hospital following the crash, the California Highway Patrol reported Thursday. He has not been identified.

The conditions of three passengers on the train who were reported to have suffered minor injuries were not available.

The crash occurred Wednesday afternoon at 4:13 p.m. when the truck, loaded with 3,500 gallons of diesel fuel, made a right turn onto a dirt road leading to an agricultural field, and was hit by the train as it
