RICHFORD, Vt. (WCAX) - A Richford man is charged with animal cruelty for shooting and killing a dog.

Vermont state police say at 7:30 p.m. On October 1st, troopers responded to the area of Route 105 and Magoon Road in Richford for a report of a dog fatally shot.

The dog’s owner told them his black German shepherd was in a field nearby when he heard a gunshot. His dog ran back home with a fatal wound to its snout.

Police say the man who shot the dog is 37-year-old Nathan Peters.

Police say Peters told them he thought he was shooting at a bear.

He is due in court on November 17th.
