HARTFORD, Conn. — As Indian American communities across the country prepare to celebrate Diwali, this year’s festival in Connecticut carries special significance: it’s the first time the holiday is officially recognized as a state observance.
The recognition comes after legislators passed a bill in August that was signed into law by Gov. Ned Lamont. It officially went into effect this week.
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most sacred Hindu celebrations worldwide, marked as a symbol of light triumphing over darkness and good prevailing over evil.
The community said the holiday brings families and communities together for prayer, reflection and joy.
