“Keep profits in Toledo,” said Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz at a recent presentation to the Rotary Club of Toledo.

“If we could only do what Carty did 30 years ago but do it better!” Wade was referring to the success of my former mayor and mentor Carleton S. Finkbeiner in his quest to bring downtown living to Toledo in the 1990s. Today’s downtown Toledo businesses, sports venues, and entertainment districts have Carty to thank for the development of the Hillcrest Hotel, Commodore Perry, LaSalle building, and Museum Place. I was fortunate to be a member of that city leadership team at that time. However, Wade is mistaken when he says that the solution to population loss is more downtown market-rate housing.
