Essendon captain Zach Merrett conceded his future remained unclear as he stood on stage and accepted a stunning sixth club best and fairest award on Thursday night.

It was a monster evening for club champion announcements as Isaac Heeney took out Sydney’s major award at a function more comfortable than the Bombers affair as Merrett’s proposed move to Hawthorn created clear tension.

“The past few weeks have certainly been difficult for me, my family and for many people in and around the Essendon Football Club,” Merrett said after taking his award.
