CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - October has been Breast Cancer Awareness Month since 1985 -- the annual celebration has led to millions of dollars raised for research and resources to help those fighting the disease.
It’s an especially big issue for Iowans, as the annual Cancer in Iowa report shows breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the state. Iowa also has one of the highest cancer rates in the country.
Dr. Ann Stroh with Mercy Cedar Rapids is an oncologist who’s been helping people fight breast cancer for decades. She says things have changed “tremendously” for breast cancer patients over the years.
“The majority of breast cancers are cured,” Stroh said.
